So much has transpired since my last blog,I can hardly explain the growth I have undergone. I am producing the best music I have ever made because it all comes from a place of joy,not expectation,it is so true that the journey not the result is the important thing to stay focused on. What a lesson to learn! I am happier than ever,Acting and training with Howard Fine has resurrected me. I breathe again with passion in my heart and a fire in my belly.

It is time for a revolution. My own one at least-Sometimes It is good to take a break from your world and explore another,to gain perspective, and ultimately a new plan.

I have so many wonderful possibilities ahead, from Tv shows to the wonderful world of film, and on a personal level a wonderful man who I intend to marry next year.

I choose to tell you the good,Instead of all the crap I have just gone through-and still am to some extent- because I think we all live on heaven and hell at the same time here on earth. Finally there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me.Finally.

I want whoever reads this to know it does get so tough, but please hang in there, but don’t hang on too tightly, sometimes you have to let go to hold something new.If you are struggling,if you feel that people are cruel, remember that there are so many new worlds out there, not everyone is the same…So try something different, you can always go back!

Make choices to stay away from negative people,or anything that makes your day blue. Find the joy in the little things, the walk in the park with your beloved pets…you know what I mean?

I often worked so hard I never got to swim in my pool, lost people I loved and what for? I won’t do that again because I know what is worth it now,I know what really matters to me anyway.

The best thing you can do for you,is to learn how to make YOU happy.Once you figure that out, everything you do will shine.

Now go out there and start your own REVOLUTION!!!!!

So hello there fellow musicians,You may know from the last blog that we have pretty much wrapped up the ‘So You Wanna Be A Dj?’ series and now my blogs are going to be more personal, because hopefully, you will have all my knowledge and the rest my lovelies-is up to you!

Been some new adjustments in my life,It would seem that the universe has made it loud and clear that it’s time for something new.

Sometimes we get upset that things don’t end the way we envisioned, but I always hope that really that means there is something new to discover around the corner-you can not be receptive to what that could be if your mind is stuck on saving the old ‘you’

I have changed my label to a slick licensing machine.I won’t be putting out any more music from other people, just myself but you can still hear all my artistes remixing my material with every release.

As a label I do make most of my money from licensing and I prefer to make music for companies as I can do various styles and this keeps me creatively satisfied. After all,on learning curve ‘Fuck with your head’ was a Dubstep track so all I see around me is nothing new-just recycled, and that is music,it is a constant circle that evolves/regurgitates.For me it is refreshing to see so many styles mashed together as I always knew that day would come.

It bums me out that promoters only book whoever is in the top 10 on Beatport and mixmag. In that way we really have lost so much art. However a new wave is turning, can you feel the revolution?

Still, for me I have decided to join acting school and try my other great passion-Acting.I start in Sept. at the Howard Fine acting school and will let you know how it goes.To be excited about something again is so very wonderful,I am so grateful I can try this…. because one thing I learned from the indie film I made is I am better at this than music,I never got the chance to pursue this craft- as I was always on the road,so,here we are-all the chances ahead of me,and a different road to journey on.

I will never stop making music, becasue it’s my oxygen,I need it to breathe,so once a month look out for music from me…..

As we have talked about so many things in the wonderful world of music, one of the subjects I would like to cover is what to do when you are at the end of one part of your career and ready to start something new. This will one day be where you are at – trust me it is where I am at today-so if it is I hope this helps you with your transition in your musical journey.
One of the great things about having a musical career is that it can lead you into so many diverse avenues, composing, engineering, producing singer/songwriting advertising, teaching etc..
For me, I can say that I am not totally hanging up my headphones anytime too soon – but will certainly be doing less as I want to concentrate on songwriting/collaborations and devote more time to my artistes on my labels. I want to focus more on less if you know what I mean and spreading yourself too thin is something you have to be mindful about. You will of course be able to see me at my residencies in La and I intend to build on those, however less and less everywhere else. This will give me some time in the studio and I can get out of the biz and back in the ‘art’ which pleases my music cravings fine. It may be time to finish that book I have been writing for years now as well!
The point is once you have all this valuable experience under your belt, what to do with it? I only listed a tiny amount above but from my perspective there is not much I don’t know about from running labels to A&R you name it I have learned it and done it.So I could turn that into a number of things-same goes for you….I know a few dj’s who have done this, you might think ‘where did so and so go’? well most likely they are doing what I am talking about now…..
There are many reasons why some djs disappear- lets start by saying some of the great ones…you have had an amazing career and no one can take that from you but you are simply running out of passion or so burned out that you can’t face getting on a plane anymore. It happens.Time for your next trick!
Some I know stopped doing drugs and it was not the same for them after,or they had kids and this was not a great way to keep the family together, these were positive reasons and I applaud them because they guys are really happy now. Many have turned their biz. into lucrative industries like Paul Oakenfold to name just one. Many escaped into film….I could go on and on but it is worth knowing what happens after because one day you will ask yourself “what now?”
I know you may think that day will never come,I certainly never imagined it,but like grey hair it is inevitable!!!
I feel lucky that I was there when this scene was truly magical,it was an amazing time and to actually have been there from its birth, its conception and to still be on top after so long is amazing.
So for me, I would like to leave it there, with those memories intact and just do whatever I want because I really want to, and because with time we as artists want different things, same as with age and growth.
I have had conversations with some who say the shady behavior of so many who say they also love music is partly why they want out.
Major labels who ripped so many off including(been there)- are just simply liars, agents who are junkies, emotional vampires who pretend to be the ‘new up and comers’,new young artistes with such a sense of entitlement and no respect, and those ’fans’ who just steal music who knows why they feel it’s ok to do this.
It all just became a horrible ocean to swim in and they felt like they were drowning in what is a really tough time for us musos. The thing they loved the most was turning into the thing they hated the most in their lives -therefore they felt compelled to turn over a new leaf and in some cases move country and do something totally different.
I can’t name names as these are friends of mine but one huge DJ told me this ‘A part of our scene is just like pop now with fake stars who don’t even push a button- When a digital store dictates what is hip-when a magazine tells you who is cool-when bit torrent sites are the modern day gangsters who rape the artiste. When ‘fans’ just care about tweeting and gossip not real support-For me,this is the time to leave because all of that literally makes me sick and does not really represent what lies beneath where the diamonds in the rough lay.’ I never forgot those words.Strong stuff.
Of course I feel there is an up side to all change,we have more control as artistes ever did,we get to be true entrepreneurs in charge of our destinys- and we have a chance to make music for the sake of art because we know it ‘aint for money anymore as I have heard so many say.But it never was for me,it was always because I enjoyed it,and it that is not your core reason then I feel sad for you because the true joy is not wrapped in a dollar but in the process of it all.The joy is your evolution from beginner to master though I understand making a living is nothing to be ashamed of,all I am saying is when you love something the money comes,I am proof of that.I used to dream when I was 14 living in a squat with no electricity going to raves that if I could earn just 500 bucks a month I would be so happy- yet somehow I knew it would never be enough and that’s why I realized early- all I really wanted was to make music and perform. So, anytime I wished for anything it was always just to be happy and the same for others.

I really hope that as you continue this journey you become excited like me to see what enfolds, what lies ahead for you,for that beauty is we never know what great thing we are about to do next,yo explore and to play out.’It aint over till the fat lady sings’ I believe it is only over when you say so,so if you need a break, remember this greatness is always greatness, you will come back if you are great at what you do if you choose to be.

A wise owl once told me there is a huge difference between letting go and giving up.I have been doing alot of letting go since my last blog. Knowing when to let go is hard but generally I go by this rule…..

: when the energy and effort you expend doing something exceeds the return and no one really notices but you..well,maybe its time to let go.

I certainly realized this myself running a label. There really is no need to do a blog every month, a podcast, a weekly streaming show- all the things that take so much time, however I do it now when I feel like it and to be truthful,I am less stressed and that means happier….The main thing is to do this because you want to,but we all gotta eat so realizing that time is a precious commodity is a necessity because this is your life we are talking about,so spend it making YOU happy as well as others.YOU CAN’T MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY.

Another frustrating issue you may have to deal with is the fact that you may spend many months building artistes, lending them money so they could work without worry ,investing your time and money into them-only to have them shit all over you and become paranoid ego maniacs.I definitely advise letting go of that negativity and concentrating on those who are blessed with some humility and not a sense of entitlement, though to be honest its hard when you see how great it could all be if only they would pull their head out their ass.

Letting go means going easy on yourself sometimes, trust the universe to unfold and take you in its arms,so I use a spa day with my girls to overcome crap like this,do whatever it take for you to change your focus.Things don’t always go our way and seeing tragedies like Japan certainly help put things in focus don’t you think?

I loathe to let go because it always felt like you are giving up on someone/something though I have oddly enough always been able to do this in relationships because I knew it was not right for me long term, business is so much harder because we often have to work with people we do not care for and that can be a pain in the ass and it’s not practical to be surrounded by fairies and unicorns-if only!

Hope this helps you -Luv & Bass DjRap x

Hi hope you are all well and dandy…..As you all know I teach at Icon collective and thought it may be helpful to share some knowledge to my ever hungry students as well as you out there….So take advantage!!!!

1.Use a high pass filter to remove 250 Hz and below on Lead vocals to make them sit better in the mix

2.Turn down your monitors to an extremely quiet level when mixing in hi-hats and shakers, monitoring at a much lower volume when mixing in short high frequencies allows you to better perceive their relative loudness in a mix.

3.Use changes in Velocity to give your hi-hat programming more life. Use higher velocities on the downbeats and lower velocities on off beats to create more of a groove

4.Use the same hi-hat sample twice with one pitched slightly higher to mimic a drummer hitting the hi-hats with different hands, The higher pitch works well with higher velocities and the lower pitched version with lower velocities.

5.For Deep basses, copy the track and run it through a bit of distortion. Then remove the low frequencies and mix it in with the original for a bit of bite and presence to the overall bass sound.

6.When recording background vocals, take two unique passes/recordings of the same harmony and pan one left and the other right. It will leave the center open for the Lead vocal and create a much better stereo mix.

7.When adding time-based EFX like Reverb or Delay to a track, do not use the inserts, instead route them to an auxiliary send where you can EQ and control the volume of the EFX separate from the source track.

8.When adding Reverb to Drums, Try EQ’ing out the high end of the reverb for a darker warmer reverb sound.

9.When mixing distorted guitars with a vocal try notching out a bit of 4K on the guitars with an EQ to create a pocket for the dry vocal to punch thru the mix.

10.When mixing in Reverb with a Lead Vocal try notching out a bit of 4K on the reverb with an EQ to create a pocket for the dry vocal to punch thru the mix.

11.Never copy a track and then pan them left and right to create a stereo image. It actually makes the track twice as loud in the middle of the mix and will remain mono.

12.In electronic music, sub bass should always be in mono. For the same reason, never put modulation effects such as phasers or chorus on your sub line.

13.Don’t hesitate to try creating larger synth sounds by layering multiple patches. It’s a great way to create dynamic patches.

14.Use EQ to CUT, not boost. When you boost with EQ you’re adding frequencies that don’t actually exist. It’s being “recreated” the EQ’s best ability to simulate what it would sound like.

15.Find the mono button for your DAW’s master out, use it. Mixing and creating sounds in mono can make issues more obvious. Heavy FX can cause mono compatibility issues, so make sure to check this by flicking in and out of mono monitoring.

Don’t forget to analyze your tracks individually for sub 40hz rumble and remove it where you find any. Your hi-hats don’t need sub bass! Used July 27, 2010

16.Find better samples, not more samples. When you find samples that work for you, organize them so you can quickly and effectively find them when needed. Time wasted looking for sounds is time not spent making the tune better.

17.My friend gave me a great piece of advice: “You have three different types of days as a music producer. 1. Studio maintenance and setup. 2. Sound acquisition and design. 3. Music creation. Don’t try the third day without the first two being sorted.

18.Don’t forget to EQ your effect returns. Reverbs in particular have a nasty habit of generating unwanted sub frequencies. A low-cut EQ after the verb on the return will solve this problem if the reverb itself doesn’t have low-cut options.

19.For super tight drum loops, try chopping them up and putting the loops into a sampler. This will allow you to have ADSR control of the envelopes of each drum hit, allowing you to tighten or soften the drum loop at will.

20.When recording external devices such as samplers and synthesizers, make sure to set your DAW’s buffer size to the smallest your computer can handle. This will ensure that your recording is as close to “on-time” as possible.

21.If you’re feeling “blocked” with your creativity try writing a few pages of stream-of-consciousness to prime the pump of ideas. Works every time!

22.Fear of judgment plays the biggest roll in artists failing to reach their creative potential. Don’t create what you think others may like, create what you need to express.

23.Average musicians create what they hear on the radio. However a true artist creates what they’re not hearing on the radio but wish they did. They must fulfill their own needs of expression.

24.Most of the creative process happens in the “incubation” period. Don’t be afraid to incubate and contemplate your ideas before executing them. Do you think Charles Dickens wrote “Great Expectations” on his first pass?

25.There is no such thing as “writers block”. If you’re feeling blocked it can only be one of three reasons: 1) Fear 2) Control 3) Empty Tank. So stop worrying about the finished product, stop controlling the destination and have an emotion to express.

26.Intuition: to ignore its presents is to deny its council.

27.The true goal isn’t to create something complicated; that’s an easy thing to do. The focus is to make something simple sound interesting.

28.Genera’s and demographics were created by corporations… don’t let those effect your creativity. Your expression falls under no “category”.

29.The less thought in the creative process the better. Your ego is the biggest killer of creative ideas.

30.Stop thinking in the studio and start feeling. What feels right?

Many of my students ask me what steps they should take to ‘get there’ Where there is no magic answer there are a few ways that us ‘oldies’ have tried that worked .

Here are some ideas. Find your dream DJ/artiste and offer to intern for them. We are all so busy that someone intelligent offing to help for free is hard to turn down. Before you know it, you will become indispensable to the artiste and most likely end up with a job which could lead to you touring with them, opening for them, making tracks for them, well, you get the picture-they could carry you the whole way while on their own journey…..I adore my Intern Pablo and he is already to amazing to ever let go! It is hard to trust and let a virtual stranger into your life and your home so you better be amazing, trustworthy and most of all reliable. It also takes time to train so if you are really smart and pick things up quickly that will only help you. Learn html and all web related software because you will be asked to do alot of menial web shit as we all have labels, social sites that will need constant updating.

Idea 2 is to call every promoter and offer to hand out flyers do whatever they need so you can have an open slot at their club.Go there regularly to show support and get to know who is in charge. Offer to help promote ask him what you can do to help and in return all you ask is he give you a 20 min slot and keep you in mind as a opener dj.

Find your strengths and offer your skills to someone who is busy and successful and you will learn so much!!! We all need help and good people that we can rely on are SO HARD TO FIND!

Send you 20 minute mix (no one has time to listen to more than 10 mins so make it incredible) to all promoters and say you are willing to spend hours promoting for them on all social sites if they will help you out. Offer to send them detailed snapshots of all your posts/a report if you like of what you are doing for them.Offer to help them set up,clean whatever it takes to show them you are dedicated. You have to earn it.You are a nobody to them right now but you may be the next big thing so hang in there.

I am away on tour in Asia right now and Pablo is single handily running my labels this month. He could get a job because of what I have taught him running any label in about 5 months. He is learning in the deep and and at a furious pace but he is learning,I can’t wait to teach him all the other things outside of the label. My point is because he does so much for me chances are he will leapfrog and advance far more quickly than just going to school, because my contacts will become his contacts etc….

On another note I hope you are enjoying my new Tv show ‘Master of the mix’

Today I want to talk about sticking it out…. ‘victory is for believers and for those who believe in it long enough’. Not so long ago Propa Talent launched with ‘Back to Life’,Metasyn. We got 20,000 views the first week to which we credited to an awsome video. We also got about 19,000 shitty emails slagging us off on every site like u tube blah…..so much hate it was astonishing and sad. That is a red flag to me….6 months later Propa Talent has broken the charts twice of the biggest drum and Bass site ever Drum and Bass Arena and I want to share that with you becasue sometimes when it feels like the world is against you,you may want to give up. My band did.We broke up. Left alone standing I continued , well, what else am I supposed to do-I am a fighter! I also believe in what I doing to the point of blind faith not always a good thing,I have lost people I love due to my love affair with music.

Still- can’t live son won’t street and I have that ‘fuck you’ mentality for sure. You kinda need that. Grow some skin, make it tough, your gonna need it when they claw at your back.

I know my artistes are amazing…I see the reaction on my streaming shows!!!!!!!! I know a great record when I hear one,it’s my job after all. You may not like me but I know you will love Echo Inada,Noiseloor and Zubes to name a few….( on the house side Brian Matrix,Mark Campbell, Sanchez & the Shockers)) Now my music is just getting good and I feel the same about the label…we are really emerging now….I know more about the label I run it inside out,so I am more relaxed and comfortable now…and the music is just getting better and better. We have a long long way to go before we can say we are a true success, but people are starting to notice. My undying support from my fans is so humbling to me.

They are helping me build these labels through my streaming shows and I love ‘em for it which is why I give so much of my time and energy to them.

We are up against the Beatport machine, dj polls and all kinds of ‘cool’ factors that get in the way of real music, however we can’t be ignored for ever if we are always spitting out quality. Search deeper than the top 10 my friends, the diamonds are buried in the coal.

I just want to thank you all for your wonderful support and to say how damm great it feels to see my artiste doing well, though not making alot of cash they, like me are in it for the right reasons, the love of great music and a chance to say ‘fuck you’ to the machine.

Well my lovelies what a mad adventure I have just been on! As you may or may not know I have been away for a month filming a tv show, due to confidentiality I can not say more but all will be revealed in November .To be lucky enough to film a Tv show is an incredible experience, one that has given me so much more knowledge than I ever had before.

I learned about a whole new genre of music, got out of my ‘lane’ so to speak and made new friends to boot. I will say it was exhausting and again I am reminded of how wonderful a peaceful life can be, so I am that much more appreciative of what I have at home for real.I missed my dogs it was actually painful.I missed teaching at Icon and my students.

Todays blog is about paying it forward. What does this mean? Well when you get to a point of so much experience, been there done that kind of thing what is the next step?

I ran my business with my boyfriend and when we split up after 3 years last month, I knew it was time to expand the Propa Talent team. There are only so many hours in a day and running two labels is not easy especially when you are an artiste with serious ADD like me!

Yes, you are still working hard and working towards world domination of course, but maybe it’s time you had an intern, have people start working for you.If your business is growing and at that stage you will need help.Training and finding the right person can be tricky and you need to be sure that whoever you let into your life is someone you can trust thought its hard to determine that right away. God knows I have been let down, fucked over a few times but every time I learned the importance of knowing my shit inside out so I always retain control in the end. They will have sensitive info like your passwords so a google search and a background check is key.Try to protect yourself and make sure you are always watching over them until full trust is attained. Don’t be lazy!!!!!!

A new intern every 6 months or so is great because you know you helped someone set up their own business, so all their hard work for you for free is not in vein.At least pay for their travel expenses and maybe spot them lunch. Its the least you can do.

I also offer internships through Icon as teaching and paying it forward to your students is so satisfying.Through teaching others you learn new things every day…..That is the best way to learn and you are guaranteed a little place in heaven for your good deeds.

Other news, I am excited to be working with Brian Matrix on future collaborations, and we are hard in the studio developing a new sound for my next project. For me, it’s time for some fun and my next project will reflect that completely.

Don’t forget to vote for your girl!!!!! Only vote once or your vote will be disqualified. Thank you!

What a difference a month makes! Last month I was talking about some pretty heavy stuff and I have been going through some really interesting times since we last spoke.

I decided to let it all go and just enjoy myself, do new things, cut the chords that I was so attached to and of course the moment I did that, I relaxed and everything fell into place.

6 remixes later all in one month a new tv show filming in Aug ( you will prob see it in Nov or possibly earlier) a heartwarming experience teaching at Icon Collective has simply made a new woman out of me!!!! Now I know that you have to go through the crap and I would have never made these decisions had I not been forced to reavaluate. So thank god all this happened, there really is a pattern and nothing is by accident in my ever so humble opinion. So many life lessons learned, life is not all work work work, balance is key,you got to give to give hope to get hope same for love….I know I am not going to get all soppy on you all don’t worry, but I am ever so grateful to the universe for hearing me and showing me some courage to make it through but most of all I am grateful to to many that sent me their well wishes and support.Wow!!!!!

I was kinda shocked how many people reacted to my blog and told me to hang in there, and because of you I did and will.So what if my record did not have any real support, got leaked 2 months early and bootlegged with no tour in site.,i’m over it and moving on because I am more than one record.

Back on the road and having it large is where I belong but I am just as happy teaching in a classroom knowing that one day when my students are having the career they dreamed of maybe I and Icon had something to do with that.

Hope this inspired you to ‘Hang in there’ like I did!!!!!!!

This blog is not just about the techy stuff in the studio but way more personal and as it’s my blog I will write from the heart. When stuff happens I write about it because you may go through this yourself as a dj and as a human, and these are some serious changes and I wasn’t to tell you how important it is to take a break sometimes.Maybe this will help you to gain some perspective as it is so important when your world is falling apart. I did and here is my view….

Now latley I have been feeling kinda dissapointed and have had a run of really bad luck….record came out early and problems with agents,labels,publicists-so called friends- breakups with boyfriends ,breakins to my home and a missed show plus this recession is killing us all….lowest music sales ever in history….it’s been tough that my friends is only the beginning. Thank god for my family and friends who have kept me sane during this tsunami. If I actually told you what was going on you would be shocked, but I will save those juicy details for my book.No point moaning I don’t have cancer and I am young and fit and have had a wonderful career and I feel blessed.

I will do the streaming show once a month maybe more if I am playing out etc…These will be concerts and you will be able to download and buy what you hear live…so exclusive music will be yours. That means new albums with my band etc… you won’t be able to get this anywhere else. And I hope you will do more than stop in and stare!I am going to write music just for you and you will only be able to get it if you watch my streaming show. So stay tuned.

People think you have to give to get well I can say that’s only true to a certain extent, people will keep sucking you dry till there is nothing left. So if you like my music buy it subscribe to the labels (and propa talent if you like d&B) and use that demand it button on my face book page and when I do shows you can get t shirts for free and my music when you buy a ticket. I will tell you how when I set up these shows to see my band.

I am very excited to start teaching an Icon collective in july there will be an announcement but you heard it hear first,so many new and wonderful things happening Like I said,it’s time to do something new.

Assholes are always successful because they are willing to step on people and do whatever it takes to be successful. nice gets you nowhere, but still I would rather be a nice nobody that an evil somebody.

So I know from talking to other artistes that many are going through this.I built this business from the street for 15 years and it aint been easy, has so many people fuck me over and it’s time for some peace and happiness.I will say this there is a lot to be happy about and good things are coming my way so remember when it all gets too much, just take a long break and come back a winner!!!!!
